Who We Are
Thatcher Farm is located on the edge of the Thatcher Plains, on part of land granted in 1689 to Milton's first resident minister, Rev Peter Thatcher. In the 1880's, the Manning's settled on Thacher Street. They and all their neighbors had a "family cow." By 1891, the neighbors had jobs that conflicted with a twice per day milking, so they sold their cow and purchased their milk from a Thatcher Farm horse drawn wagon. The advent of pasteurization in the 1920's brought the total demise of the family cow and the beginning of the family milkman and home delivery service from a truck.
From the 1920's until 1963, Thatcher Farm had 250 cows, milking, processing and delivering all from the Thacher Street location. Fields on private estates around Milton were used for growing silage corn and hay, both used for feed. The silage corn was stored in one of six silos and the cows housed in one of seven barns on Thacher Street. Development of the Town in the 1950's and 1960's made continuing that operation unfeasible as neighborhood density increased.
Today, our milk is processed and bottled by the Hatch Family in North Haverhill, New Hampshire. Thatcher Farm will always be committed to providing the community farm fresh dairy and local products.
What We Do
Thatcher Farm Home delivery puts fresh, healthy products on your doorstep saving time and money – we charge a nominal delivery charge, but are far less expensive than the large corporate delivery services and far more convenient than a trip to the grocery store and you receive a superior product.
Thatcher Farm dairy is bottled and delivered to you within 48 hours of leaving the farm. It is vat-pasteurized at 145 degrees Fahrenheit to maintain the wholesome, delicious taste and cooled gently for approximately 30 minutes; unlike many commercial organic brands that are cooked at a much higher temp and cooled for only seconds. We believe you just can't rush goodness!
While our milk is not certified organic or GMO-free, it is antibiotic-free and RSBT-free. Since the cows do eat some grain, as a supplement to provide extra vitamins & minerals, the grain is not guaranteed to be GMO free. The grass, hay and corn are all grown on the farm. Pesticides are rarely ever used, but used occasionally, for weed control.
